This week Pack had the opportunity to ask Dr. Jan Pol some questions about his family’s Great Danes.
Dr. Pol and his wife Diane have owned Great Danes for their entire 47 year marriage and their 3 kids Kathy, Diane and Charles grew up with these gentle giants. The entire family has enjoyed their company and companionship for years. The Pol family currently own 3 Great Danes, Athena, Donar and Frija. They also have a 6 year old Newfoundland named Annie.
Dr. Pol is the star of Nat Geo WILD’s No. 1 series "The Incredible Dr. Pol" and the author of Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow: My Life as a Country Vet. He's also considered a legend in his small Michigan community where he is an active supporter of 4-H, FFA and other local philanthropic organizations.
The season 6 finale of "The Incredible Dr. Pol" airs March 14th at 9pm ET/PT on Nat Geo WILD
Now to learn a little more about Dr. Pol's gentle giants and season 6...
What's your favorite part about owning Great Danes?
Dr. Pol: The regal Great Dane is really a gentle giant. We have had Great Danes through raising all three children. When Charles was a child he would use our male Harlequin Rama for a footstool and it wouldn't even flinch. In that way they are fantastic family dogs. They are incredibly friendly, smart, and each one has their own unique personality. I love all animals but for me, Great Danes will always have a special place in my heart.
Is it easy to travel with Great Danes given their large size?
Dr. Pol: Ask my wife Diane, she travels each day to work with two Great Danes and a Newfoundland in her Jeep. The Danes love to ride in the car. Charles had a Great Dane Maeson and she loved to ride in the Jeep Wrangler. You would think that it was her car. You couldn't even spell Jeep without her being right there at the door waiting for you to go out. But I tell you what, that dog would sit in that Jeep with the top and doors off -- you could go into the store and come back and hour later and she wouldn't have moved an inch. She was probably the best car alarm for that Jeep that we could have owned.
What was your favorite part of Season 6?
Dr. Pol: You know all these moments really blend in together but I can honestly say that it was a fun season to shoot. I get to work every day with people that I have gotten to know over the last four years really well, and you can tell that we have a lot of fun together because it comes across on the screen. I only hope that our fans have as much fun watching it as we did making it.
