SXSW Dog Tips

Austin will be packed with people from all over the world and in fact, SXSW is one of the busiest weeks of the year.

Here are a few safety tips in case you're planning on enjoying the festival with your pup:

  1. Make sure his/her microchip is updated with your latest personal info
  2. Keep your dog on-leash at all times (unless otherwise specified)
  3. Check that your pup's vaccinations are up to date
  4. Bring yummy treats with you in case you need his/her individual attention
  5. Carry a portable water bowl
  6. Bring well-behaved, human and dog friendly pets
  7. Keep an eye on the condition of the leash and collar, remember, safety first. (Need a new leash? Check out our friends from Dog + Bone; let's keep it local y'all!)
  8. Grab a few potty bags... remember to scoop the poop!
  9. Look around you; study the place and dogs nearby. Make sure they are all friendly and willing to sniff around

Most importantly, be aware of your dog's body language. Not every dog enjoys crowded spaces and loud noises.

Here are a few signs to identify if your dog is not loving the festival as much as you do:

  1. One paw raised
  2. Half moon eye
  3. Yawning when not tired
  4. Low body posture
  5. Weight shifted to back legs
  6. Excessive whining or other vocalization
  7. Slow or tense movement
  8. Refusal of food (especially when normally food-motivated)
  9. Restlessness or pacing
  10. Inattentiveness to owner
  11. Sweating from paws
  12. Dilated pupils
  13. Tension around eyes and mouth
  14. Licking chops without the presence of food
  15. Sudden scratching when not itchy
  16. Sudden biting at paws or other body part
  17. Turning head away
  18. Barking and retreating
  19. Tail between legs
  20. Ears back and very rapid panting

AVOID THE SXSW CROWDS: Stay local with your pup
